The second annual Australian Water Polo showdown at Bondi Icebergs, Sydney, Australia, saw the Aussie Sharks team defeating an International All-Star squad 9-8 at the second edition of Water Polo By The Sea, played on Friday. The Australian national team included six members of the side from the London Olympic Games and the All Stars featured Hungarian triple-Olympic gold medallist Tamas Kasas, Italy’s Olympic silver medallists from 2012 Maurizio Felugo and Deni Fiorentini and four-time Olympic champion coach Ratko Rudic on the side of the pool. The Australians grabbed a 2-0 lead at quarter time and led 6-5 at the main break before the All Stars stormed back to a 7-6 score with eight minutes left. The Aussie Sharks had the final answer though and finished the game in front of their home crowd with a narrow 9-8 victory. New Zealand star Joseph Kayes, playing for Szeged in Hungary, was the overall top scorer netting three goals. But more important organiser and four-time Olympian Thomas Whalan delivered an entertaining afternoon in front of a capacity crowd along Icebergs’ many balconies that included local TV personalities, sporting stars and models.
