International men’s waterpolo is staying on Asian track. The Super Final of the 2013 FINA Men’s World League will be contested in the Chinese capital Beijing as FINA sources suggest. The 2012 edition of this world-wide events with their prelims on three or four different contintens was already contested on Asian soil as well, when Kazakhstan’s metropolis Almaty had welcomed guests from four continents.
The latest decision stresses the recent moves of international top sports to the booming regions of Asia which can also be seen in waterpolo as well. Last summer Almaty hosted the Super Final after seven editions in a row in the powerhouses of South and Eastern Europe since 2005. Earlier this year the hosting of the 2014 FINA Men’s World Cup had been awarded to Almaty.
In recent past other gold medal winners in big FINA waterpolo events had been created in the booming cities of China which already hosted the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai. In women’s waterpolo the 2011 and 2012 Super Final was contested in the Chinese cities Tianjin and Changshu.
The latest decision on upcoming organisers also means that the berth of the hosting nation will move to the Asia-Ocenania Group again which can send China and two more teams to the 2013 Super Final. On the other hand, only the three group winners of the highly competitive European Prelims which had already started in Oktober can go to the Chinese capital.
