Financial problems and personal changes have caused some new scenarios in international club waterpolo. This was already visible on the women’s side in the preliminary round tournaments two European Cup competitions. In the upcoming quarter-finals we will see a real armada of four Russian teams, while other famous teams are missing or fell down in the first rankings of the new season.
As earlier reported, the team is of the reigning Champions Cup winner Pro Recco, Italy had been dissolved during the summer for financial, while eight-time winner Orizzonte Catania took part in the LEN Trophy for the first time – and finished only fourth in last weekend’s prelims.
Russian powerhouse Kinef Surgutneftegas Kirishi, home of the national team for years, finished only third in the latest Champions Cup prelims, while newcomer ZF Eger from Hungary took a second place in their pool. The two remaining top eight fields we will even see two teams from France who made to the quarter-finals for the first time since the expansion both competitions in 2006.
