After four days of tough competition, the women’s teams from Germany and Italy clinched the last two spots of this year’s Super Final in the FINA World League to be held 29 May to 3 June at Changshu, China. On the final day of the Preliminary Round tournament of Group A at Syracuse, Italy the Germans gained a decisive 6-5 victory to take the first place in the close finish of this pool. Home team Italy fell to Hungary, 9-8, but still kept the second place in real nailbiter finish thanks to the victory in the head-to-head duel against Hungary after two matches. Greece and Russia had already taken their Changshu berths the day before by their top two rankings at the tournament of Group B which was held at Volos, Greece.
The German team made it to the Women’s Super Final for the first time in the history of this pretty FINA competition which was contested for the first time in 2004. The four European representatives will be joined by USA, Canada, Australia and the hosting nation China which had been successful at the other Premlinary Round tournaments.
